Overweight at 25, a last ditch effort to get fit.. any food/health/workout tips?

April 11th, 2010 -- Posted in health food tips | 3 Comments »

Hey there guys and gals,

a quick few lines about me. I’m a 25 year old male, and I’ve been overweight since I was around 18. I spend a lot of time using computers for both work and play so thats a lot of time sitting down and not moving around. I’m not that fat that I can’t go out and do some jogging, but that alone won’t cut it at this stage. This is a last ditch effort by me to shake the pounds and start a healthier lifestyle.

When I was 22 I got all hyped up again and for a couple of months I lost a lot of weight, gained a good bit of muscle mass but then the moment I stopped exercising my muscle just disappeared and now Im the same if not a little heavier than before. I would like to know how hard I can push myself or whats the best way to start? Should I be worried about how fast I dive into this incase I hurt my heart or something?

I just want to know a few tips, for example.. I was doing 30 pushups last time a day. Should I do 30 in the morning and 30 the in evening everyday? ( once I build it back up to that ) What about situps? Should I just concentrate on running and dieting before I start doing situps ?

At this point I have zero self respect for myself and the worst part is I know Im a decent enuf looking guy if I only I was in shape. Also changing my diet seems to be quite tough because all the stuff recommended to eat either takes ages to prepare or its so random and weird you just couldn’t swap over that easily.

Anyway I can give more details if needed, also here is another quick question. I wanted to bring up my muscle mass on my arms, should I lose all my weight then maybe start taking creatine or increasing protein into my diet then? Or should I do it now while burning it off everywhere else?. Thanks very much.
The last thing I want is someone posting bad adverts like that about cleaning insides. Im serious here, this is really effecting my life and my confidence which carries over into everything I do, from the work place to my social life.

I feel bad for you – it can be so tough to lose weight and get fit if you are the sort of person who piles on the pounds easily.

With all those questions you sound like the kind of person who would benefit from a personal trainer – someone who can motivate you, and give you a programme that will actually work. I recommend you join a gym and ask about their personal trainers – almost all gyms have them now.

Also in my opinion, if you are very heavy you shouldn’t be doing too much running. A bit will be good for you but too much will put a lot of strain on your knees etc. Much better to do some running combined with using a cross trainer and maybe a rowing machine. These machines will also help to tone your upper body. Maybe cycling too!

Finally if your main goal is slimming down don’t worry too much about lifting weights – maybe 1 session per week. And forget the creatine for now! Most of your activity should be fairly long cardio vascular sessions. Some weight training is good though, lean muscle uses calories even when it’s not doing anything!
This is where the personal trainer comes in – they will create a program and tailor it to you exactly.

Finally do some group exercise – either classes at the gym, or take up a team sport. You are much more likely to stick with it if you have other people to motivate you. If you can’t afford the personal trainer then this is also the next best thing.

You can acheive all this during evenings and weekends, it doesn’t matter that you sit in front of a computer all day! Good luck.

Tips with food ingredients for my homemade health bar..?

March 28th, 2010 -- Posted in health food tips | 1 Comment »

Whats up everyone.. I making homemade protein/health bars. Im looking for a filler or somthing that can basically mold/hold the bar together. The ingredients I have now hold it together in brownie form. Ill list below what I have as ingredients and how its working, and then Ill tell you what Im wanting to do from here so I can get the exact help I need. thanks

Ingredients now..

2 cups hemp protein powder

2 bananas

1 cup oatmeal

3/4 cup of alomond chocolate butter I bought from walmart. I melt the almond/choc in the microwave and when I mush all of this together, flatten it out and put it on wax paper in the fridge it hardens to a texture just hard enough to eat.

What Im looking to do is have more of a "bar" I would like to create the bar and save the almond/choc for the outside only.. to be mixed with nuts or coconut etc.

Any ideas for "filler" or hardening agent?

I dont know about useing flour ?? I dont know a whole lot.. please give details. Thanks for reading and your time..

Leave out the chocolate almond butter. Mush the other ingredients together to make it into a dough–the bake on a greased pan at about 325 until it is the way you want it. If you need more dry ingredients don’t add flour but instead soy powder or whey powder. You might add honey. If trhe whole idea is brownies add cocoa powder and some walnuts/ You might also take a look at a straight brownie recipe and substitute into that.
